By locating the center of the rotary table first all radii can be obtained by moving the machine table a given amount off center. After locating the center and installing an end mill move milling table the radius required. Lower the quill feed to the desired depth (not the part) and lock the quill in position. Turn the rotary table's handle to machine in a circular motion to create the cut The four smaller holes must now be machined. The blue print calls for four holes equally spaced on a bolt circle. All that is required is to move over the radius of the bolt circle and drill four holes every 90 degrees. The four hole centers could be found by trigonometry and moving the table's two axis accordingly. However, since the four holes are on a bolt circle with the bolt circle center on the large hole center the rotary table can be used to find the centers by angle The part shown on page one (Overview) could be made on the manual machine as follows: You would first have to do some math to find the angle where the two straight sides come tangent to the large radius. If you knew the angle and the length of the straight lines you could machine with the rotary table around the radius to the tangent point then stop and lock the rotary clamps. Now you can machine a straight line to the tangent of the smaller radius using the milling machine table. Reverse this process and machine the other straight side. Now, keeping the angle, move the part to the center of the small radius and perform the same operations. R.S. The spoke wheel shown on the left is a good candidate for a rotary table application.
