WARNING: Machine tools present a safety hazard. Improper operation can result in severe injury. These topics are for non-laboratory study only and are not to be used in conjunction with the operation of any tool or machine described herein. Never use a machine tool without the supervision of a qualified instructor.
The first and most important step in writing a numerical control part program is to carefully plan all the steps ahead of time. The procedure, called "Part Processing", is a method that forces decisions to be made about the part before actually writing the program.

In the graphic shown you will notice that process operations are described sequentially and give the machinist information about what machine to use and what machining parameters to use. For this simple example, the part needs to be cut from stock prior to being contoured on a CNC machine. After that, the part gets deburred and plated.

The machine to be used and the operations to be performed on the machine is the first step in the process.
