Hand reamers were developed to improve the quality of holes produced by a drill bit. A drill bit typically does not produce a hole that is very accurate in size and of good surface finish.

Hand Reaming is a process where a small amount of material is removed from the surface of a previously drilled hole to improve finish, straightness, roundness, and other characteristics.

The reamer rotates and advances through the work piece or the work piece is rotated and advanced in a fixed reamer.

Purposes of hand reaming:

- Obtaining a better surface finish for a hole
- Enlarging a hole that is too small
- Straightening a crooked hole
- Achieving a close tolerance for a hole
- Rounding an oblong or oval hole
