The most important purpose of the key number is to tie together the picture of the parts on the blueprint and the B/M description of these parts. Because of this, the item number is sometimes called the "key" number in some commercial companies. The item number (or key number) identifies the part on the face of the blueprint by a balloon and arrow. The balloons are placed on the assembly blueprint in a logical rotation so they can quickly be found . For the image shown the rotation is counter clockwise.

The item number in the balloon, is shown in the B/M image below. Because the order of items is dictated by the blueprint the ordering of item numbers in the B/M will always follow a logical order.
