The Part Number column on the B/M is sometimes called the part or identifying number, especially by aerospace or defense manufacturers.

The part number column is normally used only in assembly blueprints that have multiple parts. In an assembly blueprint, the part number column for each item in the B/M will either contain a blueprint number, a part number, or be left blank.

A blueprint number will be used if the assembly contains another part that was designed by the same company. For example, a contract machine shop may have an order from a customer to manufacture an assembly which contains several different parts, all designed by the same customer. For each of these parts, the customer will provide a blueprint that will have the customer's blueprint number.

An assembly blueprint B/M may also contain the part numbers or identifying numbers of special parts that are products available only from specific companies. Examples are a special sealed bearing, an electric motor, a special type of fastener, etc. In these cases, the part number is usually the product number of the manufacturer, or sometimes the catalog number of a supply house. Whenever a special part number like this is used, the B/M will always show the name of the company that supplies the part, usually in the name or description block.

Sometimes the part number block is left blank. This usually indicates that the item is a standard, readily available part, and made by several manufacturers. The part is then simply described in the part name block
