Initial plane

In parts programming the initial plane is the Z height of the tool at the time a canned cycle is initiated. This can be the tool change position but does not have to be. Many programers use G98 word in the canned cycle block to insure that at the end of the cycle the tool returns to the Z level where it began without lateral (X or Y) movement. This ensures that the tool will clear obstructions such as fixturing before moving to a new location. This is not the same as the rapid plane.
