So far the measurement methods used on the optical comparator have been limited to measurements from the screen grid. However there are other methods and those range from the old to the new. In the example shown below only the vertical and horizontal lines of the screen are used and the movement of the stage is read of off indicators. It is a very simple machine
This is an older optical comparator that uses a drum micrometer to read horizontal movement of the stage.
The optical comparator on the right is more modern than those shown above. It has a DRO and linear optical scales like those seen on horizontal knee mills today.
The DRO/computer like that shown below is the most prevalent on newer machines today. It has the advantages of the DRO plus a caluclator-like keyboard that has built in programs to solve most machine shop problems.
