Transferring measurement involves using two tools: one for measuring and one for gaging a part feature. The part can be at the machine, in your hand, or on a surface plate. Transferring instruments are normally used when the feature to be measured is obscured, in a tight area, too large for the measurement tools at hand, or simply as a matter of convenience. Accurate measurement of shallow or internal grooves would also be an example.

Transfer measurement works two ways.

1) A forward transfer takes place when a measurement device is used to set an instrument to a certain size and then that instrument is subsequently used to gage (not measure) the part feature.

2)A reverse transfer takes place when an instrument is used to gage (not measure) a part feature and then a measuring device is used to measure that instrument.
