Telescoping gages are used to measure hole diameters from .500 inch to roughly 6.000 inches. They come in sets as shown above. The user loosens the knurled set nut at the end of the gage stem and uses their fingers to compress the spring loaded telescope feet and then locks them closed with the set nut.

The gage is then place into the hole to be measured and the lock nut is released so that the feet are released and expand to the the inside diameter of the hole. Once the gage expands into the hole the user will rock the gage back and forth to insure that it has worked it's way into the center. The lock nut is then tightened and the gage is with drawn to be measured.
