Like telescoping gages, small hole gages come in sets and range from about .100 to .500 in diameter. The small hole gages are not telescoping, They expand as a thumb screw is turned in and out from the top. The animation below shows how a hole gage that is smaller than the hole to be measured is lowered into the hole. The thumb screw is turned until the gage expands into the hole by feel and just barely touches the walls. The gage is then withdrawn and measured.
