Rigidity is one of the most important aspects of good machining. The milling machine must be tight and secure in all directions.

The spindle should be in good shape with little runout and the cutting tool and quill must be set up properly so that there is no extra un-needed tool extention to cause vibrations.

The rigidity problem is not just one of the machine and cutting tools. The rigidity of the work piece setup (how strongly the work piece is attached to the machine) is very important too. With a rigid work holding setup vibrations are less likely to be transmitted from the cutting tool to the work piece resulting in a better surface finish . As with the cutting tool, extra length or overhang is to be avoided.
Rigidity is mentioned often in these topics and for a very good reason. Rigidity is one of three key elements to good machining: The three key elements are: rigidity, coolant, and cutter. A rigid setup is a must to reduce vibrations. A good selection of coolant is also important because it keeps heat low, chips cleared, and the cutter sharp which is the third element. If the machinist constantly keeps these three things in mind he/she will produce quality work in less time. R.S.
