A turret lathe is often used to produce metal parts with different configurations. A special feature of turret lathes is a multi-position turret that is capable of carrying various tools for a number of technological operations (turning, drilling, countersinking and many others). Depending on the model and purpose, such devices are produced with standard design or are supplemented with CNC system.
General characteristics of the equipment
Machines of this group are used primarily to equip companies that produce their products in large and medium series. The workpieces machined on a turret lathe are rods, forgings and castings, as well as parts previously machined on other devices.
There are many operations for which turret lathes are used: drilling and boring holes, turning the outer surface of the part, threading internal and external threads, etc. It is reasonable to use such machines in those cases where the technological process involves a change of working tools.
Machines of this group are designed in such a way that tools are fixed in a given sequence in a special fixture called a turret. This unit of the machine, which is capable of turning after one working stroke, allows exactly the right tool to be used for machining at the required moment. To limit the tool stroke, turret lathes are equipped with special stops that disengage the longitudinal and transverse feeds.
This group of machines can be equipped with special, combined and conventional tools and can be used to machine batches of parts in a single setup, without having to make preliminary measurements and passes, without having to adjust the device settings every time.
Categories of turret lathes
Turning and turret machines from domestic manufacturers are classified according to two main parameters.
According to the type of parts to be machined, such devices are divided into models for rod or chuck work.
According to the location of the axis in which the turret is located, machines are divided into horizontal, vertical and inclined.
Turning machines of turret group can be equipped with a faceplate, three- or four-jaw chucks driven by manual or hydraulic drive, which makes it possible to perform machining of workpieces characterized by significant dimensions. These can be workpieces that have been previously produced by forging, stamping or casting.
